English speaking lesson · Social & Connection

A first date

You're on a first date at a café, getting to know each other over coffee. You practise it as a real conversation, at whichever of the four levels fits you — the room and the steps stay the same, only the words get harder.

What you have to do

Get to know each other, share your interests, and agree whether and when to meet again. You finish the lesson by getting there in conversation — not by answering questions about it. Nothing is corrected while you talk; the corrections are collected and handed to you at the end.

How it opens

Hi! Great to finally meet in person — how are you doing?

Spoken aloud by the tutor playing the your date.

The 5 steps that finish it

A step clears when you say the thing that clears it. The steps are identical at all four levels — only the example line fades, and at Natural there is none at all.

  1. 01

    Say hello

Say hello, and say how you're doing.

Hi! I'm good, thanks — I was a bit nervous!

  2. 02

    Say a bit about yourself

    Say a bit about yourself.

I live near here, and I work in a shop.

  3. 03

    Share an interest

    Say what you enjoy doing.

In my free time I like to read.

  4. 04

    Find common ground

Say if you have that in common.

I like films too — the same for me!

  5. 05

    Agree to meet again

Say whether you'd like to meet again, and when.

Let's meet again — next week, maybe?

The words, at all four levels

The same room and the same steps, four vocabularies. These are the words the lesson listens for and scores you on — with what each one means and how it sounds when you are talking to the your date.
